Music doesn’t often take center stage in gaming, but its impact on a player’s experience is oft immeasurable. When a great soundtrack does manage to rise to the forefront of a gaming experience, it can make even a mundane game pleasurable. When the soundtrack shines in an already great game, it becomes unforgettable. That’s exactly what Supergiant Games’ Bastion did to earn our award for Best Soundtrack of 2011
The one thing all of our nominees had in common is that their music is strong enough to stand on it’s own. I’m happy just sitting back in the office and listening to the CD’s even when I’m not playing the games they were created for. What made Bastion stand out from the pack is just how much impact the music had on the game itself.
The hauntingly beautiful vocal tracks blended with lonely Western-themed guitars to perfectly frame the game’s unfolding story. Like the omnipresent narrator, Bastion‘s score always knew right when to up the volume, change tempo, or switch directions based on the ever shifting world. For this, we had no choice but to award Bastion our Best Soundtrack of 2011.
